Pompeii
Pompeii archaeological ruins are famous worldwide for being a unique
example of a two thousand years old city frozen in times and the first
ever documented natural catastrophe in history.
This city was covered by the ashes of a sudden eruption on the 24th
August 79 a.c. and it remained untouched up to the XVIII century when
little by little it was brought to light. Monuments as the Forum, the
Amphitheatre, the private houses and all the other findings show us
not only the physical places where the life took place, but allow also
interdisciplinary investigations which satisfy any curiosity about the
habits of what was an incredibly modern society, ‘till showing
us private people’s stories.
Special tour to some restricted areas require previous reservation and

Ercolano -The ancient Herculaneum
According to the legend, Herculaneum was founded some 3000 years ago by
Hercules on the southern slope of Mount Vesuvius, right on the sea. Ercolano
too was destroyed by Vesuvius on 79 D.C. but while Pompeii was buried
by ashes, Erculaneum was drowned by piroclastic fluxes that sealed the
old town under more than 20 metres of mud which dried as hard as the rock.
Ercolano was the first site to be found in the early XVIIIth century by
Prince d'Elboeuf while his men were digging a deep well on his land and
ended on the stage of the ancient theatre. Differences and peculiarities
of Ercolano respect to Pompeii, make it as important and unique at the
same time.
Personally, if you’d love Pompei, you can’t miss Ercolano.

Other
points of interest: Vesuvian Villas
In
1700’s the fertile land at the feet of the Vesuvio, bathed by the
gentle sea and climate of the bay, was scattered by wonderful palaces
that the nobles built around the Royal Palace of Portici, where the King
Charles IIIrd of Borbon spent a lot of his time. That’s where first
the collection of findings of Herculaneum was hosted under the control
of the Accademia Ercolanense.
Today the land and the palaces have changed sensitively since the fasts
of royal court, but this tour may still reveal wonderful surprises. In
effect there is now a big effort by local bodies to reconvert these villas
for a public and tourist use.
