SAN CARLO THEATRE In 1787 Carlo di Borbone decided to have the Theatre of San Carlo built, and turned to the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale. His intent was that of competing with the great Italian musical centres; namely Rome and Venice. This majestic theatre, due to its capacity of accommodating more than 3000 spectators, became at that time, one of the greatest in the world. The Royal Box is surrounded by 184 boxes in six tiers; we're talking about a hall with seating in the form of an ample crown. The theatre was destroyed by a fire in 1816, and then rebuilt in a short space of time by the architect Antonio Niccolini. The following year, Gioacchino Rossini became the new director. The San Carlo Theatre and La Scala Theatre, share the honour and supremacy of being the oldest schools of Italian dance.
