The Church of St Peter in Maiella was built at the beginning
of the 14th Century on the wishes of Giovanni Pipino da Barletta, who dedicated
it to Pietro del Marrone, a hermit from Maiella, who later, in 1313, became
Pope Celestino V. Between 1319 and 1341, it was put in order by King Roberto
and Andrea of Hungary. During the restructure, which lasted from 1493 to
1508, the façade was moved forward leaving it misaligned with the
fourteenth century tripartite and cuspidated bell tower. The Church was
retouched and restored on numerous occasions until 1888 and in 1927, when
the 17th-18th Century adornments were removed. The interior is Gothic with
three naves and Gothic arches with chapels. After the restoration work,
the beautiful distinct ceilings of the central nave and transept, designed
by Bonaventura and Mattia Presti, stood out wonderfully: showing episodes
of the lives of St Celestino and St Caterina. These frescoes are some of
the best creations of Italian artwork during the 17th Century. Also notable:
the wooden crucifix dating back to the 14th/15th Century and in the first
chapel, the flooring made of majolica tiles (azulejos), which were used
frequently in the Aragonese Naples, though today, are a rare occurrence.
Additional notable piece in the interior of the church:The frescoes depicting the Story of St Martino from the 14th Century The statue of St Sabastiano di Giovanni from Nola (1645-50) The wooden, inlaid choir pew and the frescoes depicting the Story of Maddalena. |
