CAMPANILE DELLA PIETRASANTA

The Bell Tower dating back approximately between the 10th and the 11th century, owes its name to the nearby S. Maria Maggiore Church, also known as Pietrasanta Church. They both were built on the remains of the Roman Diana Temple: some of its ruins can still be admired on the base of the Bell Tower.
The Bell Tower has several marble decorations, still visible today. On the original bell tower windows visitors of the past could admire pig heads sculptured in remembrance of the legend according to which towards the 6th century after Christ the devil was wandering about the nearby roads in the shape of a pig. According to the legend Saint Pomponio chased off the devil and to celebrate the event the Church of S. Maria Maggiore was erected.

CAPPELLA DI SANSEVERO - CRISTO VELATO

The Cappella Sansevero can be considered a museum of 18th century sculpture. The original name of the church was ?Cappella di Santa Maria della Pietà? or ?Pietatella?, later it took the name of the architect who created it: Don Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero. He wanted the family chapel to be totally renovated according to a new project that lasted from 1749 to 1771, the year of the architect?s death. The presence of the patron of harts , the Prince of Sansevero, who had a key role in the cultural, social and political life of 18th century Naples, is hardly felt in other monumental places as it is here. However the name that emerges above all the others in this constellation of artists is that of Giuseppe Sanmartino, author of the most famous work of art in the Chapel: il Cristo Velato (The Veiled Christ). This extraordinary masterpiece was sculpted in 1753 and was finally placed, after various displacements, at the centre of the nave. The incredible game created by the folds of the veil, the soft contrasting shades, the expressive spiritual wealth of this unique sculpture led to the proliferation of improbable legends concerning the realisation of this work of art, that represents a unique example of technical exquisiteness, symbolic charm and lyric feeling.
